Air Commodore Malcolm White OBE, Chairman, Royal Air Force, Bomber Command Association
|02 March 2016
Your Majesty, may I on behalf of the Members of the Bomber Command Association and their fallen colleagues, wish you a very happy birthday!
In 2010, I was appointed to lead a small team charged to deliver a Memorial to Bomber Command. This we did, in Green Park, and when The Memorial was finished you graciously unveiled the statue of the "Bomber Crew" on 28 June 2012, joined by many Members of The Royal Family. This was an extraordinary day for everyone involved.
A day placed in the midst of your Jubilee year, and the day after you had returned from Northern Ireland, shortly before you 'dropped in' to open the 2012 London Olympics. For the Veterans, widows and families present on 28 June it was a truly memorable occasion. A day which will live with all who were there, and those whom we represented.
And if I may add, the most striking memory to all involved was the gentle and compassionate authority which you, our Queen, brought to this very special occasion.
It was a unique privilege to have been involved.
Happy Birthday your Majesty! It's been a delight to see you at events including the opening of the Bomber Command Memorial in London's Green Park and a private audience with horse trainer Monty Roberts in honor of international animal welfare charity Brooke. Thank you for your tireless support of UK charities, and for wearing a hat so well!
